Briefly about Thassos

Thasos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea and geographically part of Macedonia. The island was colonized quite early on by Phoenicians. Later the Greeks discovered the gold mines from where the Thasians drew their wealth and the city grew strong. The capital of Thasos, bearing the same name, though now known informally as Limenas, stood on the north side of the island. Besides the gold mines Thasos was also known for its fine wine.

People here mostly live off tourism, farming and fishing, although the main industry still remains mining. There are a few lovely beaches here but otherwise there is not that much to see. The beaches alone are worth a visit though.
