Briefly about Kavala

Kavala is the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia, situated on the Bay of Kavala, across from the island of Thasos. It was founded by the settlers from Thasos in the 6th century BC. In 168 BC it became a Roman civitas, and later in Byzantine times it was known under the name of Christoupolis. In the 6th century the city was under constant raids by barbars and the emperor Justinian I. fortified it. It was even more heavily fortified in the 7th and 8th century. The city was totally destroyed in the 14th century though and was not rebuilt until the 15th. An aqueduct was constructed in the 16th century and the Byzantine fortress on the hill of Panagia was extended. Both are nowadays the most prominent landmarks of the city.
