Briefly about Zoetermeer

Zoetermeer is situated in the western Netherlands and was until the late 1960s nothing but a small village. The name Zoetermeer translates into Sweet Lake and refers to a fresh lake which used to be on the site of the town until the 17th century. The village itself developed around the 10th century and housed mostly fisherman and farmers. The village centre, which still exists today known as the Dorpsstraat, formed in the 13th century.
