Briefly about Oskarshamn

Oskarshamn is a coastal city in Småland, known as Döderhultsvik since the Medieval age. The city was depended on the town of Kalmar for 200 years, since Kalmar had the merchancy rights on holding commerce in the bay. In 1854 Oskarshamn finally got the city charter and became one of the Cities of Sweden.

When the railway to Nässjö was built, the industrialization came to the town and the industries, as well as the harbour, started to expand. The shipyard has been the main employer for years, though later major industries formed in the area as well.

Oskarshamn was the home of the famous woodcarver Axel Petersson Döderhultarn. There is a museum containing more than 200 of his carvings located in the town.
