Nepi is situated in the province of Viterbo, just some 40 km from the city of Viterbo. It is famed for its mineral spring from which the water is bottled and sold throughout Italy.
The town of Nepet, as it was known during the Roman times, became Roman before 386 BC. It was not mentioned much in imperial times, solely as a station on the Via Amerina.
Noteworthy monuments in the town include the Borgia castle, from the 15th century and the Cathedral of the Assunta. The Cathedral was built over a pagan temple in the 12th century. A devastating fire consumed it during the Napoleonic Wars and it was therefore rebuilt in the 19th century. Still worth a visit though.
