Briefly about Narvik
Narvik is a town and municipality in Nordland county, located on the shores of Narvik Fjord inside the arctic circle. The town was founded as an all-year ice free port in the 1870's. At that time the Swedes started to obtain iron ore from Kiruna, but they stumbled upon a problem. They didn't have any means of transportation as the nearest port in Luleå was covered in ice during the winter. Therefore they built a railway to Narvik and a port there, where warm Gulf Stream keeps the sea ice free all year.
