Lidköping is the seat of Lidköping Municipality in Västra Götaland County. The town is situated on the shore of lake Vänern and the Lidan stream flows through the city, dividing it. On one side of the stream stands the so called new town and on the other the old town.

The city became one of the Cities of Sweden in the 15th century. The new town was built when in the 17th century Lidköping briefly fell under the administration of the count-ship of Jakob De la Gardie. When the crown regained the administration again, they gave De la Gardie the right to build a new city for compensation and the new town came to existence. Possession of bots sides of the city was soon claimed by the crown and the towns were unified.
