Briefly about Lauria

Lauria is a charming walled city, situated on a steep hill in the province of Potenza. The old town appeared most likely in the 10th century, near the site where later the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Armo was built. A castle was also built by Saracens around that time. In the 12th century the city of Lauria became the seat of a Norman fief. The city was badly damaged in 1806 by the French soldiers, as a punishment for having supported the Bourbon kings.

There are numerous noteworthy sights in Lauria though, and it is worth a visit if you are traveling around that area. Check out the remains of the Castle, the Sanctuary of the Assunta, the Mother Church of St. Nicholas, the church of St. James and the Convent of Immacolata.
