Latina is situated in the area which used to be a swamp. The land was drained and the city of Littoria, as it was originally known, was established in 1932. Latina is today the capital of the province of Latina in the Lazio region.
The city's edifices and monuments were mostly designed by famous architects and artists and are mainly neoclassical in style. As it is a relatively new town, there aren't any serious thrills for true history buffs, but the city is worth a visit if names like Marcello Piacentini, Angiolo Mazzoni and Duilio Cambellotti ring a bell.
