Karlstad is the seat of Karlstad Municipality and the capital of Värmland County. The town is situated at the point where Sweden's longest river runs into Sweden's largest lake. Karlstad is famed to be one of the sunniest city's in Sweden and indeed, the town's symbol is a happy sun.

The city was granted city rights by the Swedish Duke Charles, who later became King Charles IX of Sweden. The city got its name from him, since Karlstad means Charles' city. He also had a house in the city known as The King's Manor, but later the Karlstad's Cathedral was built on the site where the manor once stood.

Sadly the town was ravaged by fires and only the cathedral and a few houses remained, the rest was rebuilt after the year 1865.
