Briefly about Hoofddorp

Hoofddorp is the main town of the Haarlemmermeer municipality in the province of North Holland. Haarlemmermeer actually means Haarlem's Lake and the name refers to the body of water which once covered the land. Haarlemmermeer was drained in the middle of the 19th century and that is when the town of Hoofddorp was established. The town was soon included in the Defense line of Amsterdam, a 135 kilometers long ring of fortifications around Amsterdam, which is nowadays included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
