Briefly about Holmestrand
Holmestrand is the administrative centre of the municipality of Holmestrand in Vestfold county. It is situated by the Oslofjord just beside the water and its harbour was important for exporting lumber since the middle of the 16th century. It wasn't granted an official city status until the 18th century though. Recently the municipality of Botne was incorporated in Holmestrand.
The name of the town derives from the words of holmi and strand, which in translation would mean rocky shore.
