Briefly about Haiger

Haiger is a town in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis in Hesse. The city has a long history behind it, being mentioned for the first time in the 8th century. In medieval times it was located along important trade routes. The historic Haiger though, was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. It was later rebuilt, but the damage was done and almost nothing remained of the medival Haiger.

The Haiger church stands on an old sacral site, where pagan temples once stood. It was built in the 11th century, though later remodeled into the late Gothic style. There are important 15th century frescoes in the choir, which were for hundreds of yeas covered by whitewash. That proved helpful though as they survived the fire thanks to the extra layers on them and can nowadays still be admired.
