Briefly about Greifswald
Greifswald is situated in northeastern Germany in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The city evolved next to the Cistercian Eldena Abbey. The monks were trading salt and prospered immensely, the town growing consequently into a market town. The Eldena Abbey, as well as all major buildings in the city were erected in Brick Gothic style. The city is famed for its university, founded in 1456, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. During Reformation Eldena Abbey ceased to function as a monastery, and the religious buildings in the city were secularized. The city was badly damaged during the following years, many of its historical building demolished. In the late 1980's reconstruction of the Old Town began, some of it from zero. Even so, The historic marketplace is still considered one of the most beautiful in northern Germany.
