Briefly about Gorlitz

Görlitz is situated in Saxony on the Lusatian Neisse River. The origins of the name come from the Slavic word for »burned land«, and the first mention of the town was under the name Goreliz. As it was situated on an ancient trade road the settlement prospered and evolved into a city. When the Second World War ended, the German-Polish border was moved to the Oder-Neisse line, going straight through the city of Görlitz, dividing it. The right bank now belonged to the Polish side and the left to the German side. Polish part of the town was named Zgorzelec – it has the same derivation than the German Görlitz.
The city wasn't damaged too badly during the war, preserving its rich historic architectural heritage. It boast one the oldest civil Renaissance building in Germany, the Schönhof.
