Briefly about Giessen

Gießen is situated in the German state of Hessen. The city came to life as a moated castle in the 12th century, though parts of today's Gießen date even further back, some even back to the 8th century. In 1607 the University of Gießen was founded.
Sadly most of the town's historic buildings were destroyed during the Second World War. After the war an American military base was established in Gießen, with some 500 Americans living there.
