Briefly about Geesthacht

Geesthacht is situated in the District of the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein, set at the river Elbe. Around the year 800 a church already stood in the area, but the first mention of the town dates to the beginning of the 13th century, though it was mentioned under the name of Hachede. A change in the course of the river led to the settlement being separated into Geesthacht and Marschacht.

Geesthacht was put on maps in 1865 when Alfred Nobel established a factory in the town and invented dynamite, making the Krümmel factory the first dynamite factory in the world.

The historic city centre was sadly destroyed by a devastating fire in 1928. But Geesthacht is still a place to check out if you want to see where dynamite has been born.
