Fredrikstad is a city and municipality in Østfold county. The city was founded in 1567 by King Frederik II. It is situated at the mouth of the river Glomma and boasts the reputation of being Northern Europe's best preserved fortified town. That alone is reason enough to visit the city, as it is well worth it.

The fortifications of the town were built from the 16th to the 17th century, but when a new suburb was built on the western side of Glomma, it outgrew the old part of the town and became the centre. A devastating fire sadly destroyed most of the buildings in the 18th century.

Fredrikstad was an important harbour for timber export and a centre for ship building, but nowadays mostly light industry represents the major part of the income.
